Shooting shocks Chestermere
The mayor of Chestermere says the community is shocked by a rare shooting that left one man dead on Monday. Chestermere RCMP responded to the incident around 10:30 a.m. in the area of West Lakeview Drive and West Creek Mews. The “investigation revealed that an altercation took place inside the residence where a gunshot was fired,” RCMP said. A man with serious injuries was taken to hospital, where he later died. Chestermere Mayor Marshall Chalmers said such incidents are extremely uncommon. “Chestermere is a very safe community. I can’t tell you when the last time we had something like this happen,” Chalmers said. He added that nearby schools followed lockdown protocol due to the proximity to the shooting, which happened inside a house on West Creek Mews. RCMP called the school lockdowns “a precautionary concern.” RCMP said the incident was not random. The local detachment is investigating, with help from other units, including the Southern Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit.
