An Alberta RCMP officer has been charged with assault following an on-the-job incident in April.

On April, 13, 2018, a constable responded to a 911 call made from a home in Granum, about 150 kilometres south of Calgary.

After confirming the welfare of a resident at the home, the officer allegedly entered into a verbal exchange that escalated and became physical. Mounties said the officer pushed and punched the resident.

Cst. Troy Heystek is charged with one count of assault.

The RCMP said he has been reassigned to an administrative role pending the outcome of his trial.

Heystek is due in Lethbridge court on Jan. 15.
