Don’t let wealthy buy our elections

-

Wednesday’s Herald was enveloped in four full-page advertisements for the UCP. I wonder if people have any idea of how much money it costs to pay for that kind of advertising?

Albertans are being inundated with radio and television paid political advertisements for the UCP. Again, the cost for that kind of advertising is huge, far beyond what most political parties can afford.

When the NDP came to power, they enacted legislation that forbade corporations and unions from donating large sums of money to political parties. The reason they did this was that it is anti-democratic to have wealthy interests trying to buy our votes. Undeterred, there are conservative groups who are throwing enormous sums of money at us in an attempt to do just that.

I hope Albertans open their eyes and see clearly what is going on here. We saw it in our civic election, but enough Calgarians stood up and refused to give away their own power.

I am sick and tired of the wealthy trying to buy our elections.
