CANADA IN HOOPS WORLD CUP

-

Kyle Wiltjer had a game-high 25 points and seven rebounds as Canada clinched its first spot in the FIBA World Cup tournament in almost a decade by virtue of a 94-67 rout of Brazil Monday.

The win improved Canada’s record to 8-2 with just two Group F games remaining in the second round of qualifying. The three highest-placed teams from each group, and the top fourth-placed team between Group E and Group F, qualify for the World Cup in China, Aug. 31 to Sept. 15. Phil Scrubb added 15 points and six assists and brother Thomas Scrubb had 14 points. Marquinhos Sousa led Brazil with 17 points.

Canada will play its last two games in St. John’s, N.L., on Feb. 21 versus Chile and Feb. 24 against Venezuela.

Canada hasn’t appeared at the World Cup since the 2010 tournament.
