EDMONTON The city’s tallest tower will project corporate advertising from 69 storeys up if a rezoning proposal to allow digital signs on the building ’s exterior is approved.

A pitch to light up the outside of the new Stantec Tower has been submitted to the city, and the public is invited to discuss the plan at a drop-in session that will be held in the tower’s lobby from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday. The amendment the company wants would change the overall lighting scheme of the Ice District, Stantec says.

According to the project proposal, the lighting design could also be used to celebrate community events like Pride or Canada Day, or be lit up in Oilers’ colours.

The proposal also includes mockups for using the lighting to advertise for Rogers, Ford and TD Bank.

The 251-metre skyscraper is the tallest tower in Canada west of Toronto. It features 66 functional floors, but stretches up to 69 storeys at its tip.

Construction of the building is still ongoing, but it is expected to be finished by the end of 2019.

The Stantec lights aren’t unprecedented: The nearby Edmonton Tower has already featured lighted signs projecting designs like the Canada flag and a “Go Oilers Go.”

Ian O’Donnell, executive director of the Downtown Business Association, wrote a letter of support for the plan, adding that the lights align with the winter city strategy.

Nav Canada, which oversees air traffic, was also consulted and provided a letter saying it has no issue with the plans.
