Investigators are still trying to determine the origin of a northwest duplex fire that left five people homeless Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called to the home in the 8000 block of Centre Street N. just before noon for calls of smoke pouring out of the rear of the red-painted bungalow.

“There was a fairly high volume of smoke when we arrived,” said fire department battalion chief Alistair Robin.

“Four adults and one 16-year-old were in the home, and they’ve all been displaced.”

All five managed to escape before fire crews arrived, and no one was injured, Robin said. They’re all now being assisted by the Calgary Emergency Management Agency.

Fire officials remained at the scene into Sunday evening, and it remains unclear whether the blaze started in the basement or in the home’s rear, Robin said.

About 10 units responded to the blaze, which was doused quickly, but fire crews were continuing to monitor the scorched residence for flare-ups in the aftermath.

Despite the damage, Robin said it appears the home is repairable.

A damage estimate has not been determined.
