A woman was rushed to hospital in potentially life-threatening condition Wednesday morning after being struck by a pickup truck in northwest Calgary.

Sgt. Colin Foster with the Calgary police collision reconstruction unit said the woman in her 50s was walking her dog just after 7 a.m. when she was hit by a Ford F-150.

Foster said the truck, which was headed southbound on 5th Street N.W., struck the woman as it turned onto 26th Avenue.

The woman suffered head injuries in the crash. Stuart Brideaux, spokesman for Calgary EMS, confirmed she was taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.

Police said the woman’s dog was uninjured and is safely with family.

Foster said the driver remained on scene after the crash and police have ruled out speed, alcohol or drugs as factors. He also said the intersection has no street light and officers will investigate whether visibility in the area meets city guidelines.

So far, no witnesses have come forward and Foster asked anyone with information on the incident to contact police.

A blue Ford F-150 could be seen facing east on 26th Avenue N.W. near the intersection of 5th Street. Officers could be seen examining the front of the vehicle.

Genevieve and her family, who declined to give their last name, live a few houses down from the scene. She said she heard “a noise that was unusual” around 7 a.m., followed by the sounds of a dog barking.

“I thought maybe the neighbours were babysitting a dog or something, but then you hear the sirens come a few minutes later so you see the whole scene,” she said.

Anyone or with information or CCTV footage of the collision is asked to call the Calgary Police Service non-emergency line at 403-266-1234.
