Accused killer identified as suspect caught on camera
A still photograph taken from surveillance cameras of a man tracked from a homicide scene shows accused murderer Fuad Yasir Ali, his former probation officer said Wednesday.
Jocelyn Rainville testified she was shown a series of pictures by Calgary Police Service Det. Reagan Hossack on Aug. 6, 2015.
Rainville told Crown prosecutor Colin Schulhauser that in one of the photos she was able to identify her one-time client.
“She showed me a series of four photographs,” Rainville said, testifying via video link from Beaverton, Ore., where she now lives.
“I was able … to identify Mr. Fuad Ali off one in particular,” she said.
Rainville then showed a copy of the photograph on screen, showing a black man walking on a downtown LRT station platform.
Court earlier was shown a series of videos from different cameras following the same man from a scene in the 100 block of 10th Avenue S.E., where Mustafe Hussein was found badly beaten the evening of July 3, 2015.
Hussein, 44, died of brain trauma more than six weeks after he was found unconscious and taken to hospital.
Ali, 31, is charged with seconddegree murder in his death.
Under cross-examination by defence lawyer Adriano Iovinelli, Rainville acknowledged Ali didn’t have any distinctive features that would make him easily identifiable in a photo.
“The best you can say is the person depicted in this picture looks like Fuad Ali,” Iovinelli said.
“When I looked at the picture I recognized him as Fuad Ali,” Rainville replied.
Iovinelli also cross-examined Hossack about showing Rainville the photographs.
Hossack admitted calling Rainville to ask if Ali was her client before attending her office.
The trial continues Thursday.
