Officer bitten by police dog
Another incident involving canine cop unfolds at scene of attempted break-in
Calgary police say an officer was injured Friday when a police service dog had “unintentional contact” with a uniformed member during an investigation of an attempted break-and-enter in the northwest.
The incident occurred around 1:20 p.m. as several police units were responding to reports of an attempted break-and-enter into an occupied home in the 1500 block of Panatella Boulevard N.W.
“Several police units, including District 7, HAWCS (helicopter), and Canine were dispatched to the area,” police said in a news release.
“Several members converged on the scene and a Police Service Dog (PSD) had unintentional contact with a uniformed CPS member.”
The officer was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police say that, with the help of HAWCS, two suspects were taken into custody.
A spokesman for Calgary EMS said paramedics transported one person with a serious, but not life-threatening, injury to hospital from the area.
A second person was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Friday’s incident was the second in a week involving a Calgary police dog.
Last weekend, a police officer’s son was seriously injured when he was bitten by an off-duty police dog that was training at the officer’s home.
Two trainers in the canine unit will be assessing the dog and making recommendations as to what should happen moving forward. The child is back home after being treated for serious injuries.
