Luxury meets storytelling in unique jewelry line
Wearing a design by Canadian jewelry brand Sofia Zakia is sure to prompt a few compliments. And conversations.
The dainty pieces, which are all handmade in Montreal by a small team of artisans, are inspired by art, history and science, and are meant to provide an “unconventional, feminine exploration into iconic symbols and stories.” Featuring precious gemstones and surprising details — think: a Ufo-inspired ring that actually spins — it’s easy to see that these exceptional pieces aren’t your everyday jewelry designs.
We caught up with Sofia Ajram, the designer and founder of the brand, to learn more.
Q For those who aren’t familiar with it, what is Sofia Zakia?
A Sofia Zakia is a fine jewelry line. Handmade in Montreal, each piece of gold jewelry borrows from the gracefully expressive worlds of art, history, and mythology in a harmonious juxtaposition of luxury and storytelling.
Q What makes it different from other fine jewelry brands?
A We place strong value on elegance, fine materials, meticulous craftsmanship and iconic inspirations. Sustainability is also a very important part of the brand. We source all of our gemstones and gold through verified responsible dealers who have certificates from ethical jewelry-oriented organizations. I believe that in order to transcend time, great jewelry should not only be beautiful, but also tell a story and evoke a sense of magic through the ritual of our everyday lives.
Q Who is your target customer? A Those from 16 to over 60. Fine jewelry has a history of being for the purpose of carrying memories and that’s what drew me to it as a medium. There’s a profound sense of hope in humanity to hold a handmade piece of art that has both an inherent story and an earned story through those who wear it. There’s something really special about inherited jewelry.
Q Your creations are all designed in Montreal. Are they made there, too?
A Each piece of Sofia Zakia jewelry is handmade in Montreal. We’re a very small team of women. There are five of us, myself included.
Q And where can people check them out?
A On our website, sofiazakia.com. We also have a jewel box-sized studio in the heart of Montreal where we meet clients for bespoke inquiries.
Q What’s next for the brand?
A My forthcoming collection is all customizable pieces, engraved book covers and key tags. I was drawn to the antiquity of small charms and wanted a way to personalize them.
