1 VANCOUVER RACECOURSE ARRESTS
Up to 26 people were arrested Monday at the Hastings Racecourse by Canada Border Services Agency, who said “… it is believed a contravention of the Customs Act or the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act has occurred.” The people worked for horseowners, in the backstretch, where employees are sometimes housed in small rooms.
2 UCP APPOINTS UNIVERSITY CHAIRS
Alberta has replaced NDP appointees with private sector figures at post-secondary institutions. New board of governor chairs include Cenovus Energy CEO Alex Pourbaix, Grafton Asset Management president Geeta Sankappanavar, Altalink head Scott Thom and Capital Power SVP Katie Chisholm.
3 GOOD FENCES AND ALL THAT …
Police were called to a Hamilton, Ont. home Monday after a dispute between a man and a woman from two homes escalated to the point where a 41-year-old man allegedly argued with and threatened to shoot the woman’s husband. The suspect was charged with uttering threats to cause death. Investigators seized multiple firearms.
4 OTTAWA CITY WORKER KILLED
A City of Ottawa employee has died after being pinned between two garbage trucks Monday. Police say the incident happened near a Costco in the east end at about 7 a.m. The man was taken to hospital, where he died.
5 CITY OF SASKATOON MAY GET BACK STOLEN $1M
Last week, the city received a request for a $1M payment to be sent to a new bank account of a company that has a contract with the city. The city complied before realizing it was a scam. Most has been traced to between 10 and 15 bank accounts, most of which are Canadian, and which have been frozen by court order. The city has received $40,000 so far.
