Cavalry in upbeat mood despite winless stretch in league play

-

It’s been exactly a month since the last time Cavalry FC has won a match in the Canadian Premier League.

Panic time?

No, sir.

The Cavs have spent much of the last 31 days consumed with Canadian Championship competition and recovering from an uber-busy schedule. Indeed, it’s been hectic.

So nobody’s sweating the fact they haven’t won a CPL contest since July 21, which ironically came against York9, the same opponent they face Wednesday at Spruce Meadows’ ATCO Field (7 p.m., Onesoccer.ca).

Besides, even going winless for an extended period of time hasn’t hurt their success since the Cavs have yet to lose in the fall season and sit just one point behind topof-the-table Forge FC.

“We want to win our home games — make no bones about it,” said Cavalry Gm/head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. “Like I’ve said all along, I’m never worried about whether we’re going to be in the fight because we’re there. And the good thing about it is we’re still (near the) top of the fall season and we’re not letting go of that.

“The guys are in the room now going, ‘We want to score in front of our home fans ... we want to win again.’ “But we’re not losing games.” The Cavs (3-0-3) own the season series with York9 (3-4), with the most recent of three victories coming a month ago in a 1-0 decision on ATCO Field. They also beat York9 2-1 to open the season May 4 and shut out the Toronto-area team 2-0 on the road on June 22.

Cavalry defender Jonathan Wheeldon is out after accumulating a fourth yellow card on the CPL season.
