Cavs, Forge FC set to vie for CPL’S first title

With five matches left in fall campaign, teams are guaranteed to meet in final

The Canadian Premier League’s championship is set.

Forge FC will host the first leg of the two-game final series Oct. 26, at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton.

The decisive second leg of the total-goals finale then goes Nov. 2 at Spruce Meadows’ ATCO Field in Calgary, hosted by Cavalry FC.

This past weekend’s slate of action finally answered the question as to what the matchup would be for the 2019 Canadian Premier League Finals.

The Cavs face Forge in the inaugural championship series.

“I can’t believe we are already discussing our inaugural finals,” said Canadian Premier League commissioner David Clanachan. “It seems like yesterday we hosted our historic first match. This is another major moment for the Canadian Premier League, the clubs and everyone involved.

“Having a club from the east and west of Canada is fitting for the Canadian Premier League Finals, giving fans a true coast-to-coast experience in Year 1.”

The Cavs make their way to the final based on their capture of the CPL’S spring season title.

The fall season crown is still up for grabs between the Cavs and Forge.

“Even though the winner of the fall season should choose their home match according to CPL rules and that winner hasn’t been decided as of yet, the league office and the two clubs agreed on the match dates because of a scheduling conflict that exists with the Hamilton Tiger-cats, the primary tenant at Tim Hortons Field,” Clanachan explained.

Cavalry won the spring season with 24 points, just ahead of second-place Forge (19 points).

With five matches remaining in the fall campaign, Forge and Cavalry are separated by only two points and are guaranteed to finish first and second again.

Should the Cavs win the fall season title, the other berth in the championship series goes to the team with the best overall record on the entire campaign.

That would be the Forge, since none of the other five CPL clubs can catch the Hamilton squad or the Calgary crew in the overall standings.

There are five remaining regular-season games for Cavalry FC, with four of these games set to be played on the home turf at ATCO Field. Tickets for the home matches against Valour FC (Wednesday, 7 p.m.), HFX Wanderers FC (Saturday, 4 p.m.), Forge (Oct. 9, 7 p.m.) and FC Edmonton (Oct. 19, 2 p.m.) are still available.

Tickets for the championship series go on sale Friday.
