THE CALLA SHOW HOME

Downsizing made seamless

- JOSH SKAPIN

When the most important spaces from one’s single-family home are still prominent, downsizing can feel seamless.

This is what Baywest Homes captures with its Calla model at its parkside bungalows enclave in the southeast Calgary community of Walden.

Featuring private yards and no condo fees, these villas back onto a stretch of green space.

They’re also within a quick walk to a charming park featuring a pickleball court, playground area and plaza.

Measuring 1,239 square feet, the Calla has one bedroom above grade and allows two more in its optional developed lower level.

It also has an attached two-car garage.

At 22 feet, it’s similar in depth to what one would find in a frontdrive single-family home.

From the Calla show home, the park is seen through generously sized windows in the great room and master bedroom.

The great room’s windows are also effective at pulling sunshine across the open-concept main level, which is highlighted by a soaring vaulted ceiling.

A side window in the central dining area helps with this, as well.

In the great room, the focal point is an elegant full-height Kingsman fireplace.

It’s easy to imagine, on a frosty winter evening, a couple enjoying a glass of wine, with this fireplace helping create a cosy, upscale place in which to relax.

Important connections will happen in its kitchen, as well. Striking finishes, such as its fullheight Olympia black gloss diamond hexagon backsplash, will draw people in — but its considerate use of space that will inspire them to stay.

The L-shaped cooking space revolves around an island with a sink and extended eating bar that seat three people. There’s an abundance of space between the island and features along the kitchen walls, making it easier to circulate while helping prepare the meal, or to simply grab a snack and hang out.

Its appliances are stainless steel, and include among others, a wall oven and chimney-style hood fan reminiscent of a high-end bistro.

The show home demonstrates how its dining area can comfortably fit a table for six people. But based on its open layout, the space can also accommodate a smaller or larger table, depending on the need at that time.

The interior wall facing this dining area has a substantial niche, which is shown with a large display cabinet, ideal for storing the household’s prized dishware.

Its master bedroom is generous in proportion.

Similar to what one would see in a move-up single-family home, it reaches 13 feet one inch by 13 feet two inches.

An ensuite with dual vanities beneath a full-width mirror, deep soaker tub, and glass-encased shower is attached. The ensuite also connects to a large walk-in closet.

The theme embracing sunshine carries over to its staircase to the lower level — which in this case, is developed — with a skylight above.

The basement boasts a rec room with a walk-up bar, along with two well-sized bedrooms and a full bathroom.

Walden, master-planned by Genstar Development Co., connects its residents to both day-today conveniences and attractive outings in nature.

The community, located east of Macleod Trail, has an established commercial complex, dubbed the Gates of Walden, which is anchored by a Save-on-foods grocery store.

It also links to a regional pathways system that eventually meets scenic Fish Creek Provincial Park.
