Pinteresting time for pink Halloween

- JESSICA GODDARD

Pinterest has spoken — this Halloween, black and orange is out; black and pink is in.

Orange has always been the obvious choice when decorating for the autumn holiday, being the colour of fall foliage, pumpkins and the full harvest moon.

But according to lifestyle and design social network Pinterest, searches for “pink Halloween” are up 221 per cent since last year, as determined by the platform’s 2019 Halloween Report on what’s trending. The report tracked Pinterest users’ Halloween-related searches from July 2018 to July 2019, including costume ideas, makeup, party decorations and holiday recipes.

Examples of black and pink as a Halloween decor trend include bunches of black and pink balloons, black and pink painted pumpkins and even flamingo skeleton displays for a “Halloween flamingle” (party).

The platform also found searches for “pastel Halloween” up 164 per cent, denoting softer colour palettes for the occasion. Often the colour scheme was applied to skulls, pumpkins or tombstones to preserve their connection to the spooky holiday.

Black and pink, as well as pastels, are highlighted as a particularly viable option for children’s Halloween parties, as the esthetics are considered more playful and inviting and just a little less frightening.

Other major trends noted in the report include Stranger Things group costumes, up 653 per cent, Stranger Things decorations, up 549 per cent, and Halloween fabric gnome decorations, up 385 per cent.

In the food realm, top trending recipes were Jack-o-lantern chips and dips, white chocolate skulls and brains, dark chocolate Halloween cookies, shrunk potato heads, and poison apples.
