March 6, 1932 – Oak Lake, Manitoba October 30, 2019 – Calgary, Alberta

With great sadness, we announce that Phil Macphail passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at the age of 87 years.

Phil was born in Oak Lake, Manitoba and moved to Winnipeg at an early age. He married the love of his life Beatrice in 1956 and they remained devoted to each other for sixty-three years. As a young man, Phil commenced work in the brokerage industry, and in 1970 was transferred to Calgary to manage the office of an investment dealer. He remained engaged as a stockbroker for over fifty years and retired in 2007. Phil was a committed family man, and was active in his children’s activities, including coaching hockey and lacrosse. He was a regular presence at sports or other events involving his children and his grandson Vincent. Phil also had a great love of Grand Beach on Lake Winnipeg, which he started visiting as a teenager. He acquired a cottage and spent time every summer there with Bea and his family until prevented by recent health problems. He was also very creative and artistic. In his younger years he played the side drum in the RCAF Reserve (Winnipeg) pipes and drums band, and he also developed skill at stained glass, creating a number of pieces that adorn the family home and cottage. Phil also had a love of Christmas, and once the cottage season was over each year, he would start planning for the next Christmas to be enjoyed with family and friends. Phil’s dedication to his family, positive outlook on life, kindness and sense of humour will be greatly missed.

Phil is survived by his wife Beatrice, his children Linda (Gerald, sons Rob and Andy), Bruce and Carol (Stewart), and his grandchild Vincent. Phil was predeceased by his parents, Malcolm and Constance Macphail, and his brother Donald Macphail.

A family memorial gathering will be held at Grand Beach in the summer of 2020. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Salvation Army, 1731 29th Street SW Calgary, AB, T3C 1M6, online at www.salvationarmy.ca, or by phone 403-410-1112.
