Joachim Schwarz of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully at Agecare Midnapore on Friday, November 1, 2019 at the age of 93 years.

Joachim immigrated to Toronto in 1955 and worked in construction. From a job site across from the University of Toronto he witnessed students coming and going. Believing he too could be university educated, he was determined to achieve more for him and his family and enrolled at the U of T. After seven years of night/weekend classes (while still working construction full-time) he graduated in 1962.

He became an Urban Land Use Planner and member of the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP). His career started with the Township of Etobicoke (Toronto) and then to the Regional Municipality of Hamilton Wentworth. At this time, 1965, he also relocated his family to Oakville, ON. He retired as Manager, Planning and Development in 1991. Upon his retirement he took up golfing every day, except weekends. More importantly he and Inge happily assumed day care duties for their adored grandkids.

In 1999 he and Inge followed his only son and “favourite daughter-in-law” to Calgary, where he lived the last twenty years of his life. Joachim loved camping and fishing. Every summer holiday was spent in and around the Muskoka’s in Northern Ontario, where he instilled his love of the outdoors to his son who has passed this passion onto Joachim’s grand kids. He was also very fond of his model trains which came naturally as his adored father worked his entire life for the German Railroad.

He was a devoted and loving husband to the late Inge (nee Magditsch) to whom he was married for sixty adventurous years; a loving father to Mike (“favourite daughter-in-law” Wendy); and an adored Opa to Adam (Laura) and Tyler.

He is also survived by his little brother Christian (Kate); and nephews and nieces, Alex (Lynda), Eric (Sue), Karin, Martin, Regine (Karl Heinz), Udo, Carsten (Becky) and Marlissa. Joachim was predeceased by his parents, Emanuel and Maria; and his brothers, Norbert, Hubert, and Gunther.

Joachim was caring and gregarious; always wanted to hear about the lives of his family, friends, neighbours and anyone else he encountered. Aufwiedersehen Joachim – until we meet again!

Memorial Services will be held at MCINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. Reception to follow at the family residence. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Joachim’s family would like to send hugs and thanks to all the caregivers and staff at Agecare Midnapore (Chaparral wing).
