WIDE OPEN SPACES

- JOSH SKAPIN

Creative design offers flexibility

Large families need a home that isn’t just generously sized, but uses that space wisely, as well.

The four-bedroom Beaumont 4 by Sterling Homes makes its 2,504 square feet feel even more spacious.

A show home demonstrating this front-drive, single-family model is in the Okotoks community of Ranchers’ Rise.

By moving the staircase — which is displayed with an upgraded maple railing — from the back of the main floor to the front, there’s more square footage for its key areas, the kitchen, great room, and dining area, which all connect through an open-concept design. Such a layout also makes way for a handy central flex room.

This multi-purpose space gives families a room to use as they like. As a home office or children’s toy room, it takes pressure off the great room, which is sometimes, out of necessity, used for these functions.

The cheery kitchen is L-shaped, opening to the rear-facing dining area and great room. This creates clear sight lines and supports the ability to maintain conversations between people in all three spaces.

With substantial space around the island, there’s plenty of room for people to circulate. Perfect for an after-school snack, its extended eating bar has space to seat three people.

The island also has a sink and built-in wine rack that can hold 18 bottles.

Kitchen selections in the show home present a striking combination of white cabinets, counters, and full-height backsplash with stainless steel appliances, including an elegant chimney-style hoodfan.

The kitchen’s walk-through pantry steps into a mud room, which accesses the attached 25 foot by 24 foot garage. This creates a quick and easy path for unloading groceries.

Both the mud room and foyer are well-sized, making it comfortable to remove jackets and boots through either of the home’s primary entrances.

In addition to floor space, the foyer is eye-catching because of its volume. A soaring open to above feature helps this home feel special right from the get go.

At the heart of the second level is a central bonus room with a vaulted ceiling.

Windows on multiple walls pull in sunlight, helping to create an inviting place in which to relax with a good book or play a board game with family.

One of the three secondary bedrooms, located across from the bonus room, features direct access to the full bathroom. The bathroom can be accessed from the hallway, as well.

It boasts a large stretch of counterspace between dual vanities and beneath a full-width mirror, supporting a range of bathroom products from multiple children.

The other two secondary bedrooms, similar in size, sit side-byside, and have windows that overlook the front yard.

In both bedrooms, a portion of the exterior wall boxes out, adding visual interest to the space.

These rooms are just a few steps from a laundry room, which has a front-load washer and dryer.

The owners of the home have a space to support an extensive wardrobe. The master bedroom has a nine-foot six-inch by eight foot walk-in closet.

It also features an ensuite with dual vanities, which also have an abundance of counterspace, a shower, and soaker tub.
