Prepare for FIS World Snow Days at Lake Louise

- DANNY AUSTIN

Circle Jan. 18 and 19 on your calendar because that’s when

FIS World Snow Days are set to go down at Lake Louise. The international celebration aims to get as many people on skis and snowboards as possible, and this year Lake Louise is celebrating with all sorts of big discounts. Children 12-and-under ski free, family tubing is 50 per cent off and you can save on lessons, too. There’s a whole lot of snow to go along with those discounts as Lake Louise was hit with 9 cm in the past week and 296 cm so far this season. www.skilouise.com @Skilouise

SUNSHINE

Not every ski and snowboard lesson is looking to accomplish the same thing, but even the most seasoned alpine athlete can use a little instruction every once in a while. This year at Sunshine, they’re offering lessons for just about everybody. There are first timer’s packages for people who have never skied, multi-week programs for those looking to sharpen their skills, and even Delirium Dive lessons for people looking to start taking on the most challenging terrain. Conditions are currently great, too, as Sunshine was blessed by 7 cm of new snow in the past week and 336 cm so far this winter. www.skibanff.com @Skibanff

NAKISKA

With the holiday season over, Calgarians likely have a little more time on their hands to get out to the mountains and enjoy a day of skiing. If you’re going to Nakiska, you don’t even need a full day. The Kananaskis resort’s proximity to the city remains a minor miracle, and this year the Nakiska team has been encouraging skiers and snowboarders to take advantage of that and pop out for a morning or afternoon of skiing before heading back to Calgary. The resort saw 2 cm of snow fall in the last week and 221 cm so far this season. www.skinakiska.com @Skinakiska

KICKING HORSE

The countdown is officially on to the 2020 Freeride World Tour, which will be taking over Kicking Horse from Feb. 6-20. Before that, though, the Golden, B.C. resort is going to be hosting its other massive annual freeriding event when Wrangle the Chute goes down Jan. 22-26 and is notorious for bringing some of the most daring skiers and riders in Western Canada to the mountain. They’re going to be greeted by a whole lot of snow, too, as the 8 cm of fluffy white stuff that fell in the past week brought the season total to an awesome 374 cm. www.kickinghorseresort.com @Kickinghorsemtn

PANORAMA

All winter, Panorama is hosting weekends designed to help women improve their skiing and snowboarding skills. The Mountain Get Together weekends focus on a variety of areas — including fitness, equipment and more — and include two days of coaching. The weekend focusing on fitness is set to go Jan. 18 and 19. Panorama has been hit by 10 cm of snow in the past week and 238 cm so far this season. www.panoramaresort.com @panoramaresort

MARMOT BASIN

Every year, the Jasper in January festival is one of the true highlights of the winter in the mountains. The entire Town of Jasper seems to get in the spirit and the festival highlights all the food, drinks, art and outdoor fun that the town in the national park has to offer. This year, Marmot Basin has some big discounts available during Jasper in January — which goes Jan. 18 to Feb. 2 — including on lift tickets when you book online. Marmot has been hit by 7 cm of snow in the past two days and 198 cm so far this season. www.skimarmot.com @Marmotbasin

FERNIE

There was already a lot of snow at Fernie. Then, Tuesday happened. In 24 hours, the B.C. resort was absolutely hammered by snow, and the 30 cm that fell means Fernie is heading into 2020 with a whole lot of powder. In fact, that 30 cm has brought the season total to 327 cm. Skiers and snowboarders looking to get in on all that powder should take a look at some of the resort’s ski & stay packages. They’re currently offering major discounts, including a fourth free night of accommodations. www.skifernie.com @skifernie

CASTLE MOUNTAIN

They’re going big this year at Castle Mountain for World Snow Day, which is technically on Sunday, Jan. 19. The Alberta resort will be celebrating that whole weekend, though, with free learning area tickets for skiers and snowboarders of all ages — there will be cost-free instruction available, too. Castle has been hit with 17 cm of fresh snowfall in the past week and 444 cm so far this season. www.skicastle.ca @Skicastle

KIMBERLEY

It’s been a terrific start to the season at Kimberley, as the B.C. resort has been getting hit with steady dumpings of snow for ages, it seems. The past seven days saw 16 cm fall on the mountain, and that’s brought the season total to an awesome 176 cm. The resort has a busy January schedule ahead, including movie nights, live music and evenings specifically catering to college and university students. www.skikimberley.com @Skikimberley

REVELSTOKE

It always snows a lot at Revelstoke. Even by the B.C. resort’s usual standards, though, the start of the 2019-20 season has been insane. Revelstoke got blasted by 65 cm in the past week alone, and that brought the season total to an awesome 528 cm. That’s the sort of snow that keeps skiers and snowboarders coming back again and again. If that’s your reality, it’s worth investing in a Vertical Card. Even a one-day card saves guests $30 on lift tickets, but the more days you ski or ride, the more you save. www.revelstokemountainresort.com @revelstokemtn
