‘Accidental’ industrial fire sends one to hospital

- SAMMY HUDES

A southeast industrial fire sent one man to hospital on Thursday.

The Calgary Fire Department was called to the scene at the 6400 block of 42nd Street S.E. around 9:40 a.m.

Fire crews arrived at a large industrial building, where smoke could be seen filling the building.

Calgary fire said six workers were evacuated from the building. EMS took one man to hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

The fire started due to mechanical work that accidentally ignited insulation. The fire then travelled inside the wall and ceiling area.

Fire crews had to cut areas of the metal wall and roof in multiple areas to gain access to the fire and put it out.

Electricity to the building was shut off by Enmax to reduce the risk to firefighters.

Crews stayed on scene throughout the day, checking for hot spots using a thermal imaging camera.
