Princes Island rink closure a sad loss

-

I walked to the skating rink adjacent to Princes Island only to see a sign saying “Closed for the Season.”

The cost of this narrow vision for the inner city is sad. What makes a city attractive is people enjoying the outdoors, not being inside in front of TVS.

People clearing snow with shovels creates community. The sounds of skates on ice and the twinkle of Christmas lights spread light in a dark winter. Outdoor rinks speak of engaged communities, where safety and joyfulness abound.

I am sad we chose to close our city’s heart — especially in our economic downturn. Public space matters for health and vibrancy to flourish.
