FEMALE DIRECTORS ARE ON A ROLL

-

A record-high number of top-grossing films from 2019 were directed by women, Deadline reports. A new study from Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the University of Southern California Annenberg Inclusion Initiative examined 1,300 of the highest-grossing films between 2007 and 2019, concluding that 10.6 per cent of directors of last year’s top films were female compared to the time-frame’s overall average of 4.8 per cent.

However, non-white women directors are still under-represented in Hollywood. “Less than one per cent of all directors across 13 years were women of colour,” said Smith.

Top movies directed by women in 2019 included Greta Gerwig’s Little Women, Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers, Booksmart by Olivia Wilde, shown, and Lulu Wang ’s The Farewell.
