Calgary police are searching for a person of interest in connection to the Boxing Day killing of Farah Hersi Handule.

Authorities believe a 24-year-old man has critical information about the death that occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on Dec. 26, in which Handule, 23, was shot dead in the area of 16 Avenue and Home Road N.W.

Handule was wanted on a nationwide warrant and had been on the run from authorities for about two years. Ottawa homicide detectives had previously charged Handule with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Hamzeh Serhan in 2017.

The deceased was also accused of a gunpoint home invasion in Toronto the year before, but those charges were withdrawn shortly before the case headed to trial. He was wanted on at least two other warrants.

Mohamed Hussein Ahmed is wanted by police for questioning in relation to Handule’s death and they have an impression warrant to take Ahmed’s fingerprints.

“We’re able to capture copious amount of CCTV in that area. Those images have led us to believe that Mr. Ahmed and our victim were known to each other,” said Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta with the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit.

“He is currently a person of interest and his impression warrant for fingerprints are either to confirm or deny his involvement in this homicide.”

Schiavetta said they did not recover a weapon at the scene but fingerprints were found on evidence at or near the scene.

Ahmed is believed to have been travelling through the Calgary area but is not from Calgary. Police believe Ahmed and the deceased were known to each other and that Handule had been in Calgary since Christmas Eve.

Police said they have made numerous attempts to contact Ahmed but have been unsuccessful.

Investigators believe he may be in Saskatoon, Sask., and could be travelling in a white, 2019 Dodge Durango GT or a small black car. Calgary police are working closely with law enforcement in Saskatoon.

Meanwhile, police are still working to determine the motive that led to murder, but Schiavetta said it “obviously has the hallmarks of organized crime.” He said the service has also been in direct consultation with the Toronto Police

Service and Ottawa Police Service to determine motivation.

Anyone with information about the incident, specifically about people running or getting into vehicles between 8:45 and 9 p.m. on the night of the killing, is asked to contact police by calling the non-emergency number at 403266-1234, the homicide tip line at 403-428-8877 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
