EDMONTON Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after a teenager was shot during a confrontation with Edmonton police officers in the city ’s northeast Monday night.

At about 6 p.m., an officer came across a robbery in progress in the area of 86 Street and 130 Avenue, Edmonton police said in a news release. The officer was in the area conducting other investigations and witnessed a boy being robbed at gunpoint by another youth.

The officer then called northeast patrol for response and as they were setting up containment at the scene, a suspect came out of a townhouse and a confrontation ensued between the suspect and officers, police said. One of the officers then fired his service weapon.

The youth sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital. No officers were harmed.

Video obtained by Postmedia, shot at 7:22 p.m. Monday, shows two people lying face down in the snow as they are surrounded by a number of officers.

After a few moments of officers shouting commands and pointing lights at the two individuals, two loud pops can be heard nearby.

An officer can be heard yelling: “You with the white ho odie on, crawl on your hands and knees towards our position. Get your f---king hands out of your sleeves, if you move any other way other than to us you will be shot. Do you understand?”

Neighbours told Postmedia that police dogs then dragged the person who had been shot across the street toward officers.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) confirmed they are investigating the case in a news release Tuesday afternoon stating an EPS member shot an ARWEN device and another member fired a shot from his carbine. The youth had a lower-body injury and was taken into custody.
