Review coming after coach tells umpire to ‘shut up’

- TED WYMAN

MOOSE JAW, SASK. Not only did Team Canada’s Chelsea Carey lose an important game to Manitoba’s Kerri Einarson in an extra end Monday afternoon at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, but her father and coach Dan Carey created some controversy with sharp words directed toward an umpire, which were caught by TSN microphones.

Dan Carey told a female umpire to “shut up” after she approached him to let him know his team’s ninth-end timeout was expiring.

“That’s straight, I did,” an unapologetic Dan Carey said after the 6-5 loss to Manitoba that dropped Canada to 2-2.

Curling Canada had no comment other than to say they are reviewing the incident.

The coach of the defending Canadian women’s curling champions said he had to walk to the far end of the rink from the coach’s table and had little time left on the timeout by the time he started interacting with players from the Calgary-based Carey foursome.

The umpire came out just as he was starting to talk to the players, who were debating a shot at a key moment in the game.

“She told me I had 10 seconds left and I just got there,” Dan Carey said. “They start the clock as soon as they say ‘Time out.’ I said ‘That can’t be.’ She said ‘Five seconds,’ and then started talking. I tried to talk to the team, she’s still talking at me. If I’ve got five seconds left, let me talk. So I said ‘shut up.’ I probably shouldn’t have said ‘shut up’ but I did.”

MANITOBA STAYS PERFECT

It was an outstanding day for top-seeded Einarson, who won twice against contending teams to improve to 4-0.

Einarson scored two in the 10th end to beat Krista Mccarville 8-7 in the morning and then drew for one in the extra end to beat Carey 6-5 in the afternoon.

Through Monday’s play, Einarson has the only unbeaten team.

“That was really big,” she said after the afternoon draw. “I’m ready for bed now. We had two really great games today and it really tested us.”

Meanwhile, Ontario’s Rachel Homan improved to 3-1 with a 9-7 win over B.C.’S Corryn Brown (2-2), Saskatchewan’s Robyn Silvernagle got to 3-1 with a 7-5 win over previously unbeaten Laura Walker of Alberta (3-1) and Team Wild Card’s Jennifer Jones stole one in the 10th end to edge Suzanne Birt of Prince Edward Island (2-2) 9-8 and improve to 3-1.
