Three ways students can stretch their dollars
Here are three tips to improve your finances, from Money Mentors counsellor Brian Betz.
1. Do a real budget:
Despite the obvious, most people simply don’t do detailed planning of their expenses and income. Betz says budgeting is not just a one-time event, either. It’s an ongoing process, tracking expenses weekly.
2. Look for savings, everywhere:
If possible, live at home with family. Consider alternatives to driving a vehicle, which often involves plenty of costs. Buy a bus pass, walk or bike to school. And buying used books can save you hundreds of dollars.
3. Work part-time:
The school workload is heavy, but a part-time job can help limit the debt you incur. As well, many larger employers have tuition reimbursement benefits, including The Home Depot and Starbucks, he says.
