Calgary Zoo welcomes three orphaned grizzly cubs
The Calgary Zoo has taken in three orphaned grizzly bear cubs and are caring for them until another suitable home is found for them.
The bears were rescued in the wild and advocated for by Alberta Fish and Wildlife after the grizzly sow — the term for a mother grizzly — was killed as a result of an aggressive interaction. The cubs would not have survived on their own in nature, so Alberta Fish and Wildlife contacted the Calgary Zoo to care for them until a permanent home, potentially another zoo, can be identified.
“We have a strong relationship with Alberta Fish and Wildlife, and science and animal welfare best practices suggest juvenile grizzly cubs will do best and have the longest life when they are in a zoo environment,” said Alison
Archambault, spokeswoman for the Calgary Zoo.
The cubs were likely born in January or February, so they are estimated to be between three and four months old.
Updates on the cubs are being featured on the Calgary Zoo’s Facebook page.
