Football Alberta honours coaches

Three recognized for dedication

-

Three local coaches are being saluted by Football Alberta for their work this past season.

Cody Ehrmann of the Henry Wise Wood Warriors, Matt Hassett of Okotoks’ Holy Trinity Academy Knights and Greg Wilson of the Calgary Bantam Wildcats have captured honours as coaches of the year in the province.

Ehrmann wins the Frank Morris Tier 1 coach of the year award for heading up both the junior and senior teams at Henry Wise Wood High School. Ehrmann also spent his summer as the defensive co-ordinator for Team Alberta’s under-18 squad, which won bronze at the Football Canada Cup.

His fall season with the Warriors saw him lead the senior Warriors to a third-place finish in Calgary Division 1, while the junior Warriors advanced to the Division 1 championship game. Ehrmann’s nomination came from his players, who feel he’s committed to helping them become better football players, as well as better students and citizens.

Hassett accepts the Laurie Robertson High School Tier 2 coach of the year award after 17 years of being the Knights’ only head coach. Over his years, he has served at the provincial level on the Team Alberta Hawaii side and as the district rep for the Rockyview/foothills area of the province.

As head coach of the Knights, Hassett has built a winning program that’s taken up the challenge of the Tier 2 ranks after beginnings in the Tier 4 level. He’s reached the provincial Tier 2 final with the Knights the last two years, culminating with last year’s victory in the Alberta Bowl.

Wilson is being praised as Alberta’s bantam coach of the year. He’s been with the Wildcats since 2002, leading them to four Calgary Division 1 championships including one in 2019. The Wildcats went undefeated in league play and playoffs last year until the provincial semifinal.

Wilson is known as a coach who makes sure all his players contribute with meaningful minutes, creating a strong team atmosphere. Wilson was also selected by the Calgary Officials Association as bantam coach of the year and tied for the Brock Jacobs Award as Calgary bantam’s coach of the year.
