Eight finalists named for U Sports athletes of the year

-

They won’t be celebrating as per usual at Calgary’s historic Mcdougall Centre. But that won’t take the shine off the 2020 LieutenantGovernor Athletic Awards.

Eight finalists in the running for U Sports male and female athletes of the year were unveiled Thursday. The West will be represented by University of Manitoba Bisons swimmer Kelsey Wog and Saskatchewan Huskies hockey star Taran Kozun.

From Ontario, it’s hockey talent David Thomson of the Toronto Varsity Blues and schoolmate Lucia Stafford, a cross-country runner and track-and-field athlete.

Out of Quebec, it’s Montreal Carabins soccer star Aboubacar Sissoko and Laval Rouge et Or rugby power Fabiola Forteza.

And the Atlantic universities are repped by Dalhousie Tigers basketball talent Keevan Veinot and UPEI Panthers B-ball star Jenna Mae Ellsworth.

Each of the eight nominees have been chosen to represent their respective conferences — Canada West, Ontario University Athletics,

Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec and Atlantic University Sport — as athletes of the year or national finalists.

Celebrating their 28th year, the awards are championed once again by Lois Mitchell, lieutenant-governor of Alberta, and Doug Mitchell.

The winners will be determined by a combined vote of the Canadian Athletic Foundation, a not-for-profit board, chaired by Doug Mitchell, and the public on usports.ca. Voting opens June 9 and closes June 20, with results announced on June 25.
