City swerves out of lane on ring road

-

Peer-reviewed scientific research proves the adverse health consequences of living close to a major freeway and recommends measures that remediate them (lower road elevation, green space buffer, berm).

Nearly two decades ago, in anticipation of the future ring road adjacent to their communities, residents along the ‘transportation corridor’ worked with city planners to have these protective measures put in place when 37th street S.W. was built. The City of Calgary, socially responsible and green-minded even then, allocated $22 million to put those protective measures in place.

The 2015 version of the Alberta Transportation SWRR plan recognized, preserved, and honoured these protective measures. They remained in place until March 2020. Where are they today? Gone.

Can’t we safeguard our health and that of future generations by re-flattening the road now? It’s never too late to do what’s right. Margaret Anderson, Calgary
