Democ­racy needs newspapers

Re: Yes, Canada must act to save me­dia, Opin­ion, May 6 As Jerry Dias and oth­ers have in­di­cated, newspapers are threat­ened by in­ter­net gi­ants us­ing news con­tent and scoop­ing up ad rev­enues due to news or­ga­ni­za­tions.

Sadly, it’s meant fis­cal im­pov­er­ish­ment and shut­downs. And loom­ing to­tal­i­tar­i­an­ism, po­lit­i­cal-eco­nomic con­trol. Mind and lives run by some re­mote voice in the clouds called the in­ter­net.

“A good news­pa­per, I sup­pose, is a na­tion talk­ing to it­self,” said play­wright Arthur Miller. We need the free press de­liv­ered to the door or news­stand as part of our vi­brant democ­racy. Let’s keep the real news alive!
