Suspect in deadly attack on chef arrested
More arrests expected after break-in at site where victim planned to open deli
Police arrested a man Wednesday they believe to be responsible for the March death of an accomplished Calgary chef.
Christophe Herblin was attacked and killed in an early-morning break-in at his southwest Calgary business March 14.
Police said Herblin responded to a break-in alarm at the Bow Trail S.W. strip mall around 3 a.m., at which point officers cleared the location after attending the scene and searching the business.
Herblin remained in the parking lot waiting for a contractor to secure the business until about 6 a.m., when he was approached in the parking lot and attacked by at least three people.
Police have said they believe Herblin’s attackers were attempting to gain access to an adjoining cannabis store.
The victim was preparing to open his own French deli at the location in April at the time of his slaying.
“My dad was a wonderful man. He always put his all into everything he did. I was so looking forward to seeing him realize his dream of opening Croque Saveurs,” read a post from Herblin’s daughter Caroline posted on Facebook at the time.
The name of the suspect arrested Wednesday was not released while charges are pending. Police say they expect to make further arrests in the case.
Police are also looking to speak with two people thought to be witnesses to the homicide: Fritz Chiefmoon, 27, and Kiara Leather, 19, both of Calgary.
“We are asking anyone with information regarding the murder of Christophe Herblin to come forward,” Calgary police Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta said in a news release.
“This was a tragic, senseless event, and we continue to look for answers and seek justice for the Herblin family.”
Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Chiefmoon and Leather or who have any other information about the slaying are asked to contact police at 403-2661234 or submit a tip anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
