Homeowners bear brunt of tax hikes

Re: Grim choices await city while revenues crater; Mayor looks to senior governments amid warnings of $235M shortfall, May 1

I have listened to Mayor Nenshi say he has not heard anyone speak out about tax increases being reallocated from commercial properties to residential, and it is but a small price to pay for the privilege of living in one of the great cities of the world.

Well, listen up. I am furious at the reckless spending and note that although he talks about a 7.5 per cent increase, mine was up a whopping 23 per cent. In what world do you live where you would consider this to be sustainable, let alone appropriate?

It is time the mayor put forward a plan that is not only fiscally prudent but is based in reality. All around me people are losing their jobs, having wages rolled back and fearing for their future. William Lacey, Calgary
