Irene Triplett was the final American to receive a pension from the Civil War in the 1860s — $73.13 a month. How could someone in 2020 still receive a Civil War pension, some 160 years on? First, when she was born in 1930 her father was already 83. Second, Triplett suffered cognitive impairment­s, qualifying her for a lifelong pension as a helpless adult child of a veteran. She died Sunday at 90.
