New BMW 5 Series adds superchargers
BMW has revealed its seventh-generation BMW 5 Series, the venerable sedan that built the brand’s reputation for sporty four-doors.
The 5 Series nameplate is nearly a half-century old, being first introduced in 1972. In all those years, the vehicle has kept the same double-kidney grille, albeit now with more pronounced grille slats.
The new car’s headlights feature hockey stick-shaped daytime running lights, and the tail lights are similarly styled.
Four trim models will be available: the 530i xdrive with 248 horsepower, the 530e xdrive, with plug-in hybrid and 288 hp, the 335-hp 540i xdrive, and the topof-the-line 523-hp M550i xdrive. Every vehicle features at least one twin-scroll supercharger, with the 540i six-cylinder and M550i V8 receiving two.
The hybrid 530e can be used with an Xtraboost function that offers 40 more horsepower for up to 10 seconds and the 12-kwh battery allows 30 kilometres of range on battery power only.
All engines are connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission that has been updated for smoothness, efficiency, and response.
Inside the 5 Series is a new rear seat with 40/20/40-split capability, wrapped in Dakota leather, like the rest of the interior.
The 2021 BMW 5 Series will start production in July, and will head for global markets later in the summer. Canadian pricing has not been announced.
