Officer filmed driving knee into suspect remains on duty

- JONNY WAKEFIELD

EDMONTON An Edmonton police officer who was caught on video driving his knee into a restrained suspect remains on active duty, a police spokesperson confirmed Tuesday.

Video of the 2019 incident emerged online last week showing an Edmonton Police Service officer striking a subject, restrained on the ground by another officer, with his knee.

The man being arrested moans and cries out throughout the video clip, including the words “OK! OK! Stop!”

The officer’s actions are being reviewed by Crown prosecutors.

On Tuesday, police spokeswoman Carolin Maran said the officer “remains on active duty in an operational role.”

In Facebook comments on the original video, EPS said it became aware of the incident in the video last August. The police Professional Standards Branch reviewed the case and opted to forward it to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) to determine whether charges against the officers were warranted.
