SOMETIMES CRULLER IS KINDER

- Melissa Hank

“Donut” underestimate the beauty of pastry-based artwork. Artist Jae Yong Kim’s latest project Donut Fear — a collection of individually hand-thrown, hand-painted and glazed doughnuts — is now on exhibit at Hakgojae Gallery in South Korea.

More than 15,000 people wearing face masks have visited Donut Fear since it debuted at the end of March.

“Given the title of the show, we felt it was a perfect time to say, ‘let’s not be afraid’ — although I was incredibly nervous,” the Korean-born artist tells Delish. “But people are so happy to see the colourful work, and it’s brought a lot of smiles in uncertain times.”

Kim first debuted a solo doughnut art collection, titled Lust for Donuts, in 2012 in New York City.

Kim’s doughnuts are priced at US$950 and up. Donut Fear is being exhibited until the end of the month.
