TRUMP OPENS CONSULATE IN GREENLAND IN ARCTIC PUSH

-

The U.S. has opened a consulate in Greenland for the first time in nearly 70 years, igniting a three-way race with China and Russia for mineral wealth and strategic control in the Arctic.

It is the first time the U.S. has had a consulate in Nuuk, the capital, since the Second World War when it opened one in Nuuk to counter the Nazis after Germany invaded Denmark. It closed its doors in 1953.

Last August, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested purchasing the Danish autonomous territory because of its abundant natural resources and its growing strategic importance. Denmark flatly rejected the overture, calling it “absurd,” and saying Greenland was not for sale.
