Alberta Ballet cancels fall lineup

-

Although restrictions are slowly being lifted in Alberta, ballet still has two feet on the floor.

Alberta Ballet announced Tuesday that its fall productions including The Nutcracker, planned from September through May 2021, will not be performed. However it is looking ahead to spring 2021 to mount three shows: Swan Lake in May 2021, Peter Pan in July 2021 and it will revive artistic director Jean Grand-maître’s All of Us featuring music of The Tragically Hip in August 2021. When there is more certainty around the safety of mass gathering, dates for these three shows will be announced for both Calgary and Edmonton.

The province announced it was moving to Phase 2 on June 12 which would allow for up to 100 people at indoor seated events. But large events, such as Alberta Ballet performances, would be among the last to be reinstated.

Swan Lake and Peter Pan were originally part of Alberta Ballet’s 2019-20 season but were postponed in March. All of Us was scheduled to be part of the 2020-21 season.

“As soon as it is allowed by the health authorities who have protected us so valiantly, we will be back performing once again,” said Grand-maître.
