Accused killer of two Metis hunters denied bail for a second time

EDMONTON Bail was denied a second time to a man charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the shooting deaths of two Metis hunters on a rural road north of Glendon.

Anthony Michael Bilodeau, 31, appeared at the Court of Queens Bench in Edmonton Tuesday via video conference from the Edmonton Remand Centre. Bilodeau has pleaded not guilty to the charges and elected a jury trial. He was remanded into custody and previously denied bail after a judicial hearing April 1.

He turned himself in to Bonnyville RCMP March 31.

Jake Sansom, 39, and his uncle Morris Cardinal, 57, were found shot to death next to a truck on a rural road north of Glendon on the early morning of March 28, around the corner from a relative’s home where they were visiting.

The two spent the previous day hunting for moose to feed their families near Seibert Lake after Sansom lost his job due to COVID -19.

Family members protested their killings outside the Edmonton courthouse prior to the bail hearing Tuesday morning wearing T-shirts saying “Justice for Jacob and Morris.”

Roger Bilodeau, 56, of Glendon,

has also been charged with second-degree murder in their deaths. He is set to appear in court in St. Paul on Thursday.

The victims and accused were not known to each other.

Glendon is about 225 kilometres northeast of Edmonton
