Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam supports making Juneteenth a state holiday in Virginia, to commemorate the end of slavery. On June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Texas were freed, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Only Texas has so far made it an official holiday.
