LORD OF THE RINGS STAR DIES AT 88
British actor Ian Holm has died at the age 88. Holm, who starred as an older version of Bilbo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films, died in a London hospital on Friday after a battle with Parkinson’s disease.
After a successful stage career, Holm earned fans worldwide as the android Ash in the 1979 movie Alien. He won a supporting actor BAFTA and Oscar nomination for playing athletics coach Sam
Mussabini in the 1981 movie Chariots of Fire, and became a regular presence on film and TV screens, starring in films such as The Fifth Element and Brazil.
It is for his role as Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson’s adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novels that he is best known, however, playing the character in The Fellowship of the Ring and The Return of the King and reprising the role in The Hobbit movies.
