Big screens back in business

Cinemas to feature classic flicks at low prices as industry starts to reopen

-

Pass the popcorn: yet another Calgary theatre chain is open for business.

On Friday, Landmark Cinemas is reopening its six theatres in Alberta, including Market Mall, Country Hills and Shawnessy in Calgary. It joins Canyon Meadows Cinemas, which opened earlier this month.

For now, Landmark will be showing classic films such as Jurassic Park, Forrest Gump, Lord of the Rings, Dirty Dancing, Saving Private Ryan, Wonder Woman, and ET: The Extra-terrestrial. All classic films will be $5 every day and $2.99 on Tuesdays until July 23.

Moviegoers can see what’s playing and buy tickets at landmarkcinemas.com or through the Atom app.

Cineplex will also begin to reopen theatres in Alberta on Friday. The Calgary locations will be revealed closer to the day, Cineplex says.

Lux Cinema in Banff has reopened as has The Plaza Theatre, Okotoks Cinemas and Cochrane Movie House. Independent theatre Globe Cinema said on its website June 10 that it plans to reopen in a few weeks after it “works out all the kinks involved in reopening an indie theatre after a lockdown and during a still ongoing pandemic.”
