A new campaign is urging Albertans to rally behind local small businesses in the aftermath of the COVID -19 lockdown.

The #Smallbusinesseveryday campaign, launched this week by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, encourages individuals to commit to one or more online challenges — everything from buying a treat from a local bakery or cafe to writing a positive online review to simply telling a local business owner that they are appreciated.

While 58 per cent of Alberta’s small businesses are now fully reopened, according to a CFIB survey, only 20 per cent say they are back up to their PRE-COVID revenues.

“That’s very concerning. We still have 20 per cent of small businesses saying they’re not confident they can survive COVID,” said Annie Dormuth, Alberta director for the CFIB. “We also have our own data that shows although small businesses are struggling right now, sales to Amazon and big box stores have actually increased.”

According to CFIB polling, 75 per cent of Canadian consumers report not spending as much overall as they did PRE-COVID -19, yet almost half report spending more at larger retailers, many of whom were allowed to stay open when the pandemic hit.

“We just want everyone to realize that one simple way they can help support the economy is by thinking about shopping local and supporting small business when you’re out and about,” Dormuth said.
