Calgary sports mecca Schanks may still rescue its south location from the COVID-19 pandemic, despite the definite closure of its northern counterpart.

Bruce Ferguson, a spokesman for the landlord of the beloved sports bar, told Postmedia that despite widespread rumours that both Calgary venues of Schanks Sports Grill would permanently close due to the COVID-19 crisis, the future of the Macleod Trail location is still up in the air.

“Both locations were initially shut down due to COVID,” said Ferguson, the director of leasing for Landsdowne Equity Ventures, the landlord for the south location.

“Since that time, we have been in discussions with owners of the south location about the prospects of reopening under an extended lease term,” said Ferguson.

“As of yet, we haven’t come to any final agreement and likely won’t for the time being.

“But it’s very much a work in progress. The discussions are ongoing.”

It was reported last week that neither of the city’s Schanks locations would reopen, apparently falling victim to the global pandemic.

Postmedia was not able to confirm those reports.

A notice on the door of the north Schanks bar states the lease of that location has been terminated.

“Schanks has confirmed to us that, yes, indeed, the north location is shut down,” Ferguson said.

“But that apparently was precipitated by the landlord there.”
