Let teachers decide on own pensions
Re: Kenney, Notley spar over new UCP referendum bill, June 25
Premier Kenney is set to embark on a series of referendums to gauge Albertans’ support for a provincial police force, an Alberta pension plan and a change in the federal equalization formula.
He says he values “giving power to the people.”
Such is not the case when it comes to the Alberta teachers’ pension plan.
During the seven-year period of 2013-2019, had the Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund been invested with AIMCO, as the premier is insisting upon, the fund would have lost $1.3 billion.
If Premier Kenney truly believes in giving power to the people, then he should ask teachers how they want their retirement fund invested. Let’s give teachers a vote about their pension investment. Premier Kenney can’t have it both ways!
