ROOM TO MOVE FREELY

Nero’s flexible floor plan includes a kitchen spacious enough for whole family to gather

- JOSH SKAPIN

Every domestic chef has had to encounter an extra person or two venturing through the kitchen while they’re in the middle of getting dinner underway.

In some cooking environments, that’s an instant disruption. But with the right design, an extra body or two is barely noticed.

The Nero by Hopewell Residential exemplifies the latter. This 1,376-square-foot paired home is displayed as a show home in the southeast Calgary community of Mahogany. It’s available in Prairie, Arts and Crafts, and Modern Country exterior elevations.

When designing a harmonious cooking space, size is the first box to tick. This kitchen does this with both floor space and surfaces on which to prepare food. The kitchen is L-shaped and has a peninsula with an eating bar beneath pendant lighting.

Between the peninsula and the features along the kitchen walls, which includes generous counter space, there is substantial separation. This creates a clear, central path, allowing people to circulate without getting in the way.

The abundance of areas on which to chop, dice, and season, also decreases the chance of people bumping shoulders as they squeeze in for a sliver of counter space. Furthermore, the pacing of appliances is an underrated consideration. These stainless steel devices are well dispersed, creating valuable openings for movement. Among the appliances demonstrated in the show home are an elegant chimney-style hood fan and fridge with French doors.

The kitchen sink is positioned under a large rear-facing window. This allows a parent to put the finishing touches on dinner while keeping an eye on their child in the backyard.

A dropped bulkhead helps differentiate the kitchen from the dining area and great room, spaces it connects to through an open-concept design. The dining area and great room have their own focal point with a wall that boasts eye-catching white panel detail.

Measuring 12 feet 11 inches by 11

feet eight inches, the great room is a welcoming space in which to gather and relax. Its well-sized windows pull plenty of natural light across this area and other ends of the main level.

For a cosy glow, an optional fireplace is offered in the great room.

There are three bedrooms, with a rear-facing master bedroom and two secondary bedrooms that sit side-by-side along the front.

The master bedroom is 12 feet 11 inches by 11 feet and features a spacious walk-in closet, ensuite, and a substantial window. Additional natural light comes from a window in the ensuite.

If three bedrooms isn’t the right fit for one’s needs, there’s a second-floor option for dual master bedrooms instead.

There are multiple options for basement development, including one that allows for a fourth bedroom with a walk-in closet.

Mahogany is an award-winning community by Hopewell’s land development division. Stretching 25 hectares, Mahogany’s lake is the largest freshwater lake in Calgary, enjoyed by residents for a variety of water activities, such as swimming, canoeing, and kayaking.

Other outdoor features include 22 kilometres in pathways, 30 hectares in naturalized wetlands, and 30 parks and playgrounds.

There’s also an Urban Village commercial development that features a variety of businesses, including a Sobeys grocery store.
