Goaltender Sparks to attend Flames camp
The Calgary Flames are adding more competition in the crease, with goaltender Garret Sparks reportedly headed to training camp at the Saddledome on a tryout basis. Sparks has 38 NHL appearances on his resume but logged just one big-league outing last season with the Vegas Golden Knights.
The 27-year-old owns a 14-18-2 record, a 3.10 goals-against average and .897 save percentage. He also backstopped the AHL'S Toronto Marlies to a Calder Cup title in 2018.
Calgary's puck-stopping tandem is presumably set, with prized freeagent signing Jacob Markstrom as the go-to guy and David Rittich as the backup. Sparks would battle Louis Domingue for a spot on the taxi squad.
Artyom Zagidulin and Tyler Parsons — if he has fully recovered from an ankle injury — are also in the mix but likely ticketed to spend this winter in the minors.
The Flames open camp Sunday to prepare for a 56-game slate.
