Will city council take a pay cut?

-

Re: Council makes move to enhance expense oversight, Dec. 15

I asked city Coun. Diane Colley-urquhart whether a reduction in council wages was being considered during the most economically stressful times we have faced since the Great Depression. She was too busy to respond, however, her liaison did reply on her behalf: Budget cuts, staffing reductions and pay scales are all being discussed as options for managing the current financial situation. While I cannot speak to whether specific city staff will be taking pay cuts, all options are being considered.

So, evidently, no cuts are on the horizon but they are being discussed. The pandemic is closing in on its first anniversary. Many businesses in the city have been locked down twice and hundreds of people and businesses are in dire straits, if not bankrupt. Will city councillors take a pay cut or issue layoffs? Not a chance. John Friesen, Calgary
