From sweet to heat: Stampede unveils 20 new midway eats
Whether it's tangy, crunchy, spicy, sweet — or downright daring — this year's Stampede midway fare is bringing back fan favourites and wacky new treats for the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.
Twenty new creations were unveiled Tuesday, including a thirst-quenching pickle lemonade, pork intestines deep-fried and wrapped around a stick, and a seafood ramen poutine with deepfried ramen noodles, cheese curds, clam and fish meat, and a glaze.
The star of the show, however, might be Louisiana gator bites for the adventurous.
Kyle Corner, manager of Stampede programming, said they're rumoured to taste like chicken.
“They are deep-fried Louisiana gator tails. They're cubed and marinated in a spicy mixture and served with Louisiana tarter sauce,” Corner said before highlighting a few more yet-to-be announced treats.
“It's hard not to think about cold beverages today, so the shark attack lemonade definitely has my attention. It is literally a fish bowl — a gallon — of lemonade with a grenadine shark,” he said. “We (also) have a mini doughnut batter wrapped around an Oreo and deep-fried. I'm falling over just thinking about it.”
For those searching for some heat (outside of this week's scorching temperatures), the Stampede concessions will include a “triple dog dare you” jalapeno cheese hotdog, and Flaming Hot Cheetos mini doughnuts topped with jalapeno cheddar cheese drizzle.
To cool off, attendees can enjoy a cotton-candy flavoured sweet treat from Summerland Soft Serve or a funky “street corn” quencher served in a coconut from Drink a Fruit.
There are also a few classics with a twist hitting the menu. Big Coco's is unveiling a Cool Ranch Doritos corn dog, Mr. Vegetable is merging two favourites for a French fry corn dog, Happy Fish is debuting sushi tacos, and Tikka N Tequila is serving butter chicken bombs, which Corner said “look absolutely insane.”
Meanwhile, there's a heavenly pairing of sweet and salty with a peanut butter bacon burger and the double doughnut chicken burger, which, as you might have guessed, is a deep-fried piece of meat sandwiched between two glazed sweet buns.
Is your mouth watering yet? Wait, there's more.
Plenty of vegetarian options will be available on the grounds, including sweet teriyaki cauliflower wings and a plant-based “UN'CHICKN” burger.
For those who just want a sweet taste of cheesy goodness, there's also a rainbow-coloured grilled cheese and potato-less cheese curd poutine. Other notable newbies include blueberry mini doughnuts on a stick and rainbow street corn.
“People should expect a familiar but unrecognizable (midway),” said Corner. “There will be a little bit more space to move around and a lot of the familiar food you've come to love and we hope you'll enjoy, and our carnival rides.”
